Romantic Vintage Valentine 'Scape

           {SOFT}
                                                                                        {ROMANTIC}

                                          {VINTAGE}

                                                                     {PINK}
These are the words that were swirling around in my head as I planned ONE of my Valentine tables.

My inspiration was an old set of dishes--Duchess, by Paden City Pottery--that I'd had stored at my mom's for several years.  These are beautiful dishes that we actually used as our everyday dishes for quite a while, when our boys were small, then I decided {gasp} that I would sell them at a garage sale.  Alas, they didn't sell, so they stayed at my mom's until my heart called out to them to celebrate Valentine's Day.

Isn't she lovely?  Duchess.  The perfect name for her.

VINTAGE...we use the term so often, but do you ever wonder about the history of
our beloved dishes and crystal and serving pieces?
What family owned them?
(I bought her from a friend's neighbor years and years ago.  She had
no use for them and didn't like them.)
What family meals were celebrated with these dishes?
Were they reserved for special occasions only?

I used our Lenox Eternal as a charger...creamy bone china that went perfectly with The Duchess.
And our gold flatware~a gift from my precious grandmother (who also fed my early tableware addiction).
The treats for the sweet in Depression glass Cherry Blossom, by Jeannette Glass Company--
a gift from my MIL years ago.
I also used them for a tea party HERE.
Waterford napkins, and pink linen tablecloth I've had for years.

Ahh...crystal.  Is that my favorite?  No, The Duchess is too.  It all is.
Since this is my fantasy table, I used a mix of glass/crystal/stems where I liked it all best.
The on-the-rocks glasses with the gold rim were a wedding gift a "few" years ago ;).
The iced tea stems are Godinger/Shannon, Sutton Place pattern,
and the champagne/tall sherbet stem is a recent gift from my mother,
for our last anniversary.
The full set, from her china cabinet to ours~the perfect gift.
(I don't know the pattern and haven't been able to find it--
do you know what it is?)

The roses are "vintage" too--
I went to my favorite...ahem..."florist"--Aldi--where they usually have beautiful roses.
These were the perfect shade--a creamy, pale yellow with pink--perfect for The Duchess,
but they were, well...a bit "vintaged."
Then it occurred to me that they would be perfect--a bit worn, but still lovely,
just like The Duchess!
~
I like to mix things up a bit on my tables, rather than have everything matched, so the two "vases"
for the "vintage" roses are vintage too,
and they came to live with us from a box lot at an auction.
They came to the perfect home for them,
where they'll be loved.

Many, many years ago I fell in love with these bone dishes and had to have them.
And I keep them in my kitchen cabinets--you NEVER KNOW when you're going to need bone dishes, right? ;)
They were used in the olden days to keep the fish bones that were removed
away from the rest of the food on one's plate.
We don't see much bone-in fish any more, do we?
I remember as a child having the fish bones removed from my fish.
Love them even if they're just there to be pretty.

And speaking of being pretty...
What shall we call her until we know her real pattern name?
"Pretty" would work for me...

Double the pleasure.

Waterford Lismore pitcher

Roses and crystal and candles and linens and china, oh my!

Shopped the house and look what I found--a heart-shaped dish!
Candy-covered pretzels from Krema--you can order the best
candies and nuts from them HERE.

And guess who came over to spend the night just as I finished my table?
Our BABY LOVE,
One of  the LOVES of our lives--
She quickly changed into her full princess regalia--
with my pearls and heels too, of course.

Tell me about your vintage dishes...do you think about their past?  Does that bring more meaning to them/to you?  Or am I romanticizing because the DAY OF LOVE is near?  What dishes and other pretties do you love and why?

Thanks for stopping by.  Please leave me a comment to let me know you were here—I read every single one of them!  Your comments encourage me and inspire me.  And if you like what you see a lot J, maybe you’d like to +1  or "pin" this post too!  Thank you!

  2. I just love this table! When I think of a girly table, this is the look that always come to my mind. It's light and delicate looking. I love the Duchess pattern and I'm glad they didn't sell at the garage sale. I've sold a few things over the years that make me want to kick myself now.

I feel exactly the way you do about vintage dishes. I wonder about their story. That's why I actually love the old better than the new.

I'm glad you shared about the bone dishes. I admit to being such a dork that I didn't know what they were for when I would see them in the vintage stores.

    Just lovely!

  4. What a lovely table. I too am addicted to "fantasy" tables using all the crystal I can gather. I am calling the pattern Pretty as well since I have these (a Christmas gift last year from Hubby) and cannot find anyone that knows the pattern. Really not important since I love them! Your Princess completes the beautiful table.

    1. Thanks, Shanee, for your sweet comment about our princess. Nuts in love. :) I can't believe you have the same crystal pattern! I've spent quite a bit of time trying to find what it is; would love to know, but I'm glad we're going with "Pretty" for now. :) Thanks for stopping by.

  12. Just BEAUTIFUL, Zuni! I loved seeing your beautiful granddaughter, in her tiara & pearls...too cute!

Aren't you glad those gorgeous dishes DIDN'T sell?? I'm SO glad you saved them.
I can't help you with the stemware, although it looks a little like the Princess line from the 70's.

I have a few pieces of the Cherry Blossom, by Jeannette Glass & I cherish them. They were only used for birthday celebrations when I was growing up. I need to do another table with them soon. They'd be perfect for Valentines Day!

    1. Aaahhh...you must love crystal as much as I do, yes? I love china and silver, but crystal I think is my weakest spot. Did you happen to see my Three Kings post where I mentioned that I loved the glimmer of my Arby's "crystal"? Even that!! :)

  18. Hello Zuni,
Well, first of all, let me begin by saying that I love chickadees too. We keep a feeder outside our front window year round so that I can watch them. They are so adorable! Your little chickadee sitting at the table is adorable too.
Now, on to your table. It is lovely! I love your china pattern and I do love vintage dishes! Duchess is a perfect name. I'm glad they didn't sell.
I'm so happy you stopped by and I'm following you now. Enjoy your weekend.

    1. Hi, Sandy. The days have gotten away from me, but I wanted to respond to your sweet comments, especially about our chickadee. :) But I love all chickadees--I call them the clowns of the yard, because I've noticed they approach the tree or feeder at full speed then seem to try to slow down FAST! They're so cute. Thanks for visiting and for following!

  22. Zuni, if you so much as even LOOK LIKE you want to sell that china again, I will hop a plane and come there and beat you like Ringo Starr's drum kit!!!! :-) :-) :-) Girl, those are beautiful!!! BEAUTIFUL, I say!!!! Look at the salad plates! Where on earth would you find another set of dishes with such a uniquely shaped salad plate?!?! Look what a beautiful table you were able to create with them!!! And the pattern is so delicate and feminine and outwardly pretty...those things are gorgeous! Let's pretend you never mentioned that you tried to sell them IN A GARAGE SALE!!!!!!! :-) Oh, my goodness! My blood pressure is probably sky high right now. I'd better go take a pill! :-) Have a wonderful weekend, sweet Zuni!

    1. Alycia - your comment was so funny I pulled it up on my phone to read it to some people!! I know...a weak life moment...but "she" didn't want to go; "she" knew better. I'd forgotten how beautiful those salad plates were, so it was sort of a Christmas morning feel when I saw "her" again. I promise to never do this to you again. :)

  23. Zuni, the words you first posted just resonate with me! To me, vintage MEANS love story! Something so cherished, it continues to grace the earth. Your china is so sweet and elegant, and so aptly named. Everything looks like it belongs together, even the vintage roses. Thank you so much for sharing this wonderful table with us!

  25. I love your vintage dishes. The table is so pretty. Vintage is the absolute best. We've become such a throw away society and by using something old and cherished, we reverse that tide if only for a speck of time. Great able.. xo marlis

    1. I agree, Marlis, that vintage/recycled is great. These old pieces have such character...I'm glad to know we share this appreciation for them. That's one of the many reasons I love blogging (I'm still pretty new at it)--to find others with like interests. I had started to think not many women were interested in all this. :)

  26. Beautiful, romantic tablescape...and we are in complete agreement...family treasures are always the best. Replacement places can often help you identify crystal. They usually want to see the stem first, more than the bowl with the pattern. Evidently different crystal manufacturers used specific stem designs repeatedly. Thank you for inviting us for a peak. 31. What a lovely post...I often wonder how people used dishes of mine that were "pre-owned" and hope they enjoyed them as much as I do. Your dishes are so beautiful! Love the delicate floral dishes. The whole is beautiful!

  32. Thanks, Tess. I love finding others with common interests and thoughts, so thanks for letting me know. With vintage pieces I also wonder why people got rid of them in the first place--like when the owners pass away and the next generation doesn't care about the family ties or memories, so I especially like to give them a "real" home where they'll be valued and enjoyed. :) Thanks for stopping by!
