In Honor of Those Who Paid for Our Freedom

Loving our country and our freedom as I do, any day that speaks of patriotism is a good day for me, and one to celebrate. However, this year I'm in a more retrospective mood, wanting to observe Memorial Day as it's meant to be observed--in quiet reflection of the sacrifices that have been made for me, for my family, to revel in the freedom in this wonderful country.

If you've visited before you probably know that my parents, 5-year-old little brother, and I left escaped from Cuba in 1961 (to say that we "left" is a huge and inaccurate understatement). And we came to this grand country, that welcomed us with open arms, seeking only one thing:

FREEDOM

And FREEDOM we found:

                                 FREEDOM to work

FREEDOM to live where we wanted

FREEDOM to buy the food we wanted with no rationing

FREEDOM to go to the school of our parents' choice

FREEDOM to worship where we wanted

 Above all else, we found...

                            FREEDOM from FEAR.

So this Memorial Day, I will take the time to thank the men and women who paid the ultimate price for the

                                    FREEDOM

that they so valiantly gave us.
