For years I’ve thought I “needed” a pair of deer (the tabletop kind, not the barn/field kind), but I hadn’t really seen the ones I wanted. My mother has the Fitz and Floyd ones that are gorgeous, and those are some I’ve considered, but I just haven’t been sure about which ones, so I haven’t pushed real hard to get some…until this year, when I did our Christmas china cabinet in Friendly Village ~
Then I got kind of serious about finding just the ones. It wasn’t an exhaustive search, but I kept an eye out for some I liked (and that I liked the price!), but nothing was jumping out at me…until…Mr. Chickadee and I walked into Harick’s, a favorite shop near our home in Shawnee Hills. You know how the music plays and the light shines upon the Christmas tree that Clark spots (Christmas Vacation)? That’s exactly what happened when I spotted the deer.
But they were pricey—more than I wanted to spend, and I get pretty stubborn about what I’m willing to pay. So we kept looking around and I told Mr. C that there were 3 or 4 things I’d want to take home, one of them being the deer, if only the price were right. Yep…you’re ahead of me, aren’t you? Guess what was under our tree when Santa came?!
When I “gently” questioned Santa about losing his mind he told me the owner agreed to hold them for him while we were there, and agreed to a fabulous price “adjustment.” I’m going with that, so I can enjoy them to the fullest! I know you’ll see these guys a lot over the coming years, now that I finally have my deer!
But you know we bloggers can’t leave things plain and simple. They needed to be nestled and fussed over, of course, to create the after-Christmas-yet-Christmassy centerpiece tablescape I wanted.
I took a ton of pictures, because I want to show you the detail on them—the fur, or hair (my research says it’s one and the same) is quite visible, though they’re made of some sort of resin, I guess.
And did you notice the bark candle in front of the deer lying down? My brother has been making tons of these for me—they are really, really cool, and perfect for my love of woodland settings.
I think I’ll be leaving this “centerpiece” up for quite a while—certainly into January—though admittedly it has to be moved for any meal involving more than the two of us. Mr. Chickadee sits at the end of the table, so that works. I sit right in front of them, but I’ve been able to set my place just fine, which means I’ve been enjoying them up close.
I’m always curious about centerpieces—what do you do? Do you leave a large one like this up and work around it? If we do anything here at home for New Year’s Eve I’ll probably just move it back and continue with the woodland theme to not get too fancy this year, and I’ll do a simple buffet around it. For our New Year’s Day pork and sauerkraut it’ll surely need to be moved.
I’m wishing you and yours a happy New Year and the best in 2015!!
Thanks so much for stopping by. I hope you’ll leave me a comment to let me know you were here—I’m thrilled to know you stopped by, and I’ll always visit back and comment too. Zuni: Your deer are absolutely great! Your wonderful husband gets major points for having given them to you. You've complemented them perfectly with bark candles. I love your table runner. It's Christmas-y without shouting it out loud. I don't usually keep centerpieces on the table beyond the party. Even though I have a separate dining room, the centerpiece begins to bug me right away, and I end up putting it away, or getting rid of it as soon as the flowers dry out. Happy New Year, Zuni! Wishing you wonderful things for the coming year!
ReplyDeleteThe table setting is beautiful. I like to leave a centerpiece up for several days, even after the official day of the holiday. To help make room at the table to eat, I leave the centerpiece at one of the side place settings, leaving room for three people to eat. Since there are two of you, you may try this to see how you like it.

Wow, aren't they magnificent, Zuni! What a wonderful gift to find under your tree, too. What a sweetie your hubby is! : ) Your table looks beautiful and I love your hutch. My hubby was out of town so much this month (he's in retail) that I never did get to use my Friendly Village plates for dinners.
ReplyDeleteHi Zuni!
ReplyDeleteI loved having a visit from you! I so love your Friendly Village decorated hutch. That's a favorite pattern of mine and you decorated your hutch so perfectly. Wasn't that so sweet of your hubby to surprise you with those gorgeous deer??! You made such a pretty tablescape with them to enjoy all January long! The bark candle that your brother made is adorable! Does he sell them?
Happy New Year blessings to you and your family, Zuni.
Those deer are so regal! Gorgeous and so is your table, Zuni. So happy your husband bought them for you...so we can enjoy them when you do a table that includes them! The bark candle your brother made looks so real. Your hutch is decorated so nicely.
ReplyDeleteHave a wonderful weekend.
Querida Zuni!
ReplyDeleteHope you had a beautiful C'mas with your dear Family. I love the pair of reindeers, I love deers, they are one my very fave C'mas features for decorating. Your table is gorgeous, as usual my friend.
Here to wish you and yours a happy and blessed 2015.
Besitos,
FABBY
Zuni, aren't husbands who understand our obsessions the best?? Your deer are amazing and the sweet story behind them make them even more special! Those bark candles are great, too - nice to have such a talented brother. Hope your Christmas was wonderful and I hope the new year is the best ever!!
ReplyDeleteI just love your deer and the centerpiece you made with them! It is just perfect for winter decor. The bark candles your brother made fit in perfectly. Sometimes I leave my centerpiece on the table and we eat around it. That is what I did in my dining room this year. Other times I move it off the table, it just depends.
ReplyDeleteZuni, your table is perfection. I love the Woodland thene. So beautiful. The deers are adorable and your brothers candoes are stunning. They look like ones you can buy at Pottery Barn.
ReplyDeleteWishing you a blessed 2015.
Janet
Zuni, The deer are beautiful. I would have swooned over them too. I am so glad you have them and look forward to seeing them in future posts! Dianne
ReplyDeleteWhat wonderfully thoughtful gifts from Mr. Chickadee! He is a keeper for sure. Your rustic, woodland tablescape is beautiful, Zuni & could stay up all winter. I usually set my tallest elements of the centerpiece off to the sideboard when we sit down to eat & always have in mind something smaller to move into its place. That way, folks can see each other & converse easily while eating. I don't see why yours couldn't stay up if you're doing a buffet around it.
ReplyDeleteLOVED your pinecone cheese ball, BTW! Too cute! I picked up the Great Balls of Cheese book that Kitty was always talking about. It has a TON of cute ideas in it. http://www.amazon.com/Great-Balls-Cheese-Michelle-Buffardi/dp/1118497201
Happy New Year, Honey & I'm glad we are BOTH back to blogging!
Oh my, love your deer. They are beautiful. Great for a woodsy table. I like a centerpiece for the table for the party or dinner then I like a beautiful centerpiece on the table all the time. I always.have a centerpiece on the table.
ReplyDeleteGorgeous, I love your woodland look. So beautiful. Thanks tons for linking to Inspire Me.
ReplyDeleteOMGoodness the deer are GORGEOUS!!!! I am so glad Santa briught them to you!!! The setting is fabulous! We have a long narrow table in the kitchen so I do our centerpiece along the back of the table and we sit next to each other in front of it. I never have to move it that way. Wishing you the BEST in the new year!!! XO, Pinky
ReplyDeleteI am in LOVE with the deer! Beautiful! Hugs and blessings, Cindy
ReplyDeleteI totally love the deer and your dear Zuni are beautiful, along with the centerpiece.
ReplyDeleteThank you for your sweet visit querida amiguita; I so appreciate it and yes, I so dedicate it to you too, such special bloggy friends.
Happy New Year...Feliz Año Nuevo 2015!

Love your tablescape and the deer are amazing!
ReplyDeleteYour table is gorgeous and I wouldn't remove the setting until Easter! I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE your deer!!! Oh, how I wish I could find a pair for my home! My husband is a hunter and I've always been drawn to real deer, not decorator deer and these are perfect! Oh, and tell your brother I adore the candles he makes!! Are they for sale in your shop?
ReplyDeleteThe deer are perfect! I adore them. I am glad your hubby was so generous to you.
ReplyDeleteHello Zuni,
ReplyDeleteTY for dropping by. I love the wooden theme a lot. With all the log candles, they make your table magical.
Have a great 2015...
