Log Cabin Thanksgiving

My brother and sister-in-law are blessed to live in a REAL log cabin, and yes, out in the country, on 13 acres:

DSCN3204

I was going to first do a peak at the inside “logginess,” but why wait? It’ll set the tone for you, for a Log Cabin Thanksgiving day…they’ve been hosting all 30-some of us for the last several years. Yes, it’s lovely to spend Thanksgiving there.

DSCN9519

DSCN9530 Of course this is the kitchen, but it’s the view from the great room, so it’s a very open, cozy floor plan.

DSCN9515 How about these carved logs? They are the ones you barely see in the picture above this one, as the “entry” into the open kitchen.

DSCN9520 Even the stairs are half-logs…and though I haven’t mentioned the decor, it’s perfect for the setting. They both have a lot of fun searching auctions and other interesting haunts for just the right pieces…

DSCN9535 yes?

DSCN9534 The island is of course the hub—with hors d'oeuvres on one side, and heavy cooking activity on the other.

DSCN9532 And of course, the back of the cabin faces west…how’s that for a view from the kitchen table and the window over the sink? I may not mind doing dishes with this view!

Because my SIL also suffers from the same china-and-silver-and-crystal addiction that so many of us do, she could not…WOULD not…give up her formal dining room—it’s in the loft! (For those old enough to remember Green Acres…she’s the Eva Gabor to my brother’s Eddie Albert—the gentleman who plays farmer.) And yes, it’s lovely to have such beautiful, dainty things in this rustic setting. That’s another post, but one I will surely do, because I know you will love it.

To host our huge crowd they move the feast to the walkout lower level, and does.she.set.a.table—well, tables. Take a look.

DSCN9590 Table #1 (round, front): Friendly Village

Table #2 (oblong, to the right): Whites Turkeys and Browns

Table #3 (top left): Cornucopia and Pinecones.

I know, I know…you want the details. Here are the close ups.

Table #1 – Friendly Village, with red and brown accents.

DSCN9564

DSCN9568 (and some silver too.)

Table #2 – White Turkeys and Browns

DSCN9548 Would you take a look at the crystal? And the bread plates? And the Pottery Barn white turkey plates? Oh…and the silverware? A table for 12 with all the trimmings.DSCN9584 DSCN9551 I think this year I will sit at the table where these figurines are…I just love them. Do you think she would know where to look if they went missing? ;)

And finally, Table #3 – Cornucopia and Pinecones

DSCN9561 Isn’t this an unusual (and beautiful) cornucopia? And a lovely mix she has incorporated into a centerpiece. DSCN9559 DSCN9553

As I look through my pictures I realize I didn’t take pictures of our fabulous meal—we’re a big cooking family, and there’s always way too much food. I was either taken by the table (very likely), or very hungry (very likely). Note to self: Take pictures of the food this year!!

I leave you with Mr. Turkey—my cheese ball appetizer—and their darling little grandson, perplexed by this goofy-looking turkey! :)

  1. WOW - what a beautiful home, it's to die for. Yes, she does like dishes like the rest of us. Can she ever set a table - it looks terrific. the perfect place to have a family thanksgiving dinner. Can hardly wait to see all the food your having. Now don't forget to take some pictures ...... I can smell the turkey and dressing right now.
Happy thanksgiving and for sharing this with us.

  2. What a beautiful home and place to spend Thanksgiving, Zuni! It is also a great occasion if you are a dish collector to bring some of them out to set all those tables. I'd hate to do the clean-up though! : )

  4. Wow! Wow! This is incredible! I LOVE the steps! That is really different and cool! I've never seen steps like that in my life! They really fit well into the overall decor! The whole stairwell is just too cool. The posts are rugged looking and I love the carving!

I love the carvings above the kitchen entry, too! How cool are they??!?!?!!! Wow!!!!

Their home is beautiful, and I love it that your sister-in-law is into dishes and such! Tell her I love her!!!!!! :-) Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family! Enjoy yourselves in those fabulously rustic surroundings!

  5. Now that's one heck of a Thanksgiving ! I enjoyed this very much as I don't want to really look at posts about Christmas until after Thanksgiving!

Years ago we used to spend Thanksgiving at a cabin as well...my ex's uncle had one out in the country and it was a huge crowd...same sort of open floor plan, wonderful view, and for two years running a pet deer raised from when he was a fawn, who walked around inside the house!

  6. What gorgeous spot to celebrate winter holidays! It must be amazing at Christmas too! It all looks wonderful. She is a dear to do all that work for all of you so you can celebrate together. Our hostess has that many, but 12 of them are children, so there is lots of joyful noise. She doesn't have this kind of space either! Have a blessed Tgiving!
