When my husband and I spent three weeks in France and Spain several years ago, we were in Cannes a good part of the time. We were traveling solo—no tour guide—and we literally stumbled into Le Suquet, the old part of Cannes. What a loss it would’ve been if we’d missed it! The streets there were laid out 400 years ago! The main streets are now pedestrianed, and feature lovely, tiny restaurants and shop after shop after shop of beautiful, colorful French linens and dishes. I was in heaven! Because the streets climb up to the clock tower (where the view of the Bay of Cannes is incredible), the restaurants build tiny platforms, where they manage to squeeze in as many tables as possible~it’s so charming!
Unfortunately, theft is a “bit” of a problem in Cannes, and our cameras were stolen while we were there, so we have no pictures of that leg of the trip. :( Local Nomad Blog has this picture of Le Suquet’s restaurants and the ingenious “wedge” platforms~
Le Croisette is the famous beach in Cannes, seen in its full glory in many, many movies. So recently I did a tablescape using the tablecloth we bought at one of the sweet little shops in Le Suquet, and let it be my inspiration. What a wonderful souvenir it has been!
I decided to keep the additions to the table at a minimum, so as to not detract from the design.
The early-morning sun casts lovely shadows on our screened porch. The yellow and blue dishes are Big Lots finds—and a perfect match for the tablecloth! The fish dishes are by mudpie.
And the lavender—after all, this is a table of the south of France—is from our garden.
The wine/lemonade goblets and the Mexican on-the-rocks are from Pottery Barn.
I’ve had the gold tablecloth and napkins for years—a happy match to the Le Suquet tablecloth!
A simple jar with lavender and Stella d’Oros, also from our garden, for the centerpiece.
The service table, with the candles at the ready for evening dining.
Sunflowers add to the French beach decor. Oh, the fields and fields and fields of sunflowers we saw, all with their big and little faces turned to the sun, and the pictures we took of them…
Did you know, that in French and Spanish sunflowers are called “tournesol” and “girasol” respectively, which literally translate to “turn to the sun”? What a perfect name for them!
As dusk arrives, time to light the candles and enjoy the shadow play. The Chocolat window piece is quite befitting the event, yes? It was a Mother’s Day gift from my husband, because the movie
Chocolat, and the music from it, are favorites of mine. He somehow snuck it out of the French Hen Barn Sale without my seeing it! Love it!
…and enjoy a glass of icy-cold lemonade with me.

This is my kind of picnic....a casual but pretty table and cool lemonade. You have everything decorted so pretty, and I really like the painted windo. Thanks for joining me at the Grill, BBQ, and Picnic Party this week.
ReplyDeleteI am instantly in love with that little street. I can feel the atmosphere right through the photo. So sad about your cameras though.
ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely table. You did a great job. As I looked at it I was thinking of how there would be condensation on the glasses and then there it was in one of your photos up close. Mmmmmm. Refreshing.
Wow, woman! Great photos!!!! You really do that fabulous table linen justice with all these great photos! The daylilies with the lavender accents are the PERFECT accompaniment!!!!!! I like it that you separated the daylilies from the sunflowers so that each could shine on their own. The whole table looks great (especially love those little fish dishes!!), and it's especially perfect out on your porch. It just looks like that's just where it belongs! It's cool that you got to visit Cannes. What great memories you must have! Your husband is REALLY good to have gotten that huge sign by you undetected!!! It looks great on your porch! Great table, Zuni, and really terrific photography!!!
ReplyDeleteWhat an exquisite table Zuni.
ReplyDeleteEverything lends itself to a perfect peaceful place to enjoy the company of friends and family.
I adore the first photo (well all of the photos really) and would give anything to wander those streets right now.
Everything you've chosen fits perfectly into your theme. You have so much talent.
Thank you for sharing. I really enjoyed visiting and would love to sit awhile ;D
Zuni, so sorry about your cameras, but you came home with a treasure.. Love the tablecloth. a whole whole lot!!! And the pieces you put on it certainly play it up well. I love the addition of the lavender. Must really plant some around here!! Your style is amazing. I love love your table because it's beautiful and transports me right back to France.. xo marlis
ReplyDeleteIt's so sad what happened with your camera, something similar happened to us in Italy with our backpack, anyhow, your table cloth is a dream! love the colors, it's my favorite color combo.
ReplyDeleteZuni, this is lovely and reminds me so much of a trip we took to Provence a few years ago. I love your tablecloth and the way that you let it "shine". It is a treasure. So sorry about the loss of your camera on your trip. I have never been to Cannes, but we did stay in Nice and, happily, have some wonderful pictures. I would have been heartbroken not to have them. However, I know you have happy memories and that, after all, is really what counts!
ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely table! You've really captured the feeling of Cannes. Beautiful tablecloth, and your flowers set it off perfectly.
ReplyDeleteThat tablecloth is a beauty -- so perfect with all your other blue and yellow things. Sorry about your cameras. I have about decided to travel only stateside for a while. My purse was snatched on the street in Naples when we were on our honeymoon.
ReplyDeleteLove the tablecloth...so beautiful. This s a perfect picnic. Sad
ReplyDeleteTo hear about your camera.
What a delightful setting to enjoy the summer weather! Blue and yellow has always been a favorite combo -- that's the color palette of my living room. The tablecloth certainly is a treasure to remember your trip.
ReplyDeleteI appreciate the sweet comment you left on my summer garden post.

What a beautiful tablescape. Well done. You have a particular talent and it certainly evokes the coast, France, all of it. I just found you through The Thrifty Groove. I'm your newest follower.

ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful post. I love every element of it. Starting with the tablelcoth, it is my favorite color combo and it is exquisite. So neat that you could wander around Cannes and find these neat streets, shops and the wonderful linens. That is the way to travel.
ReplyDeleteYour table is so pretty, I love the touch of lavender. I can only grow the butterfly lavender here and I love the French lavender soooo much. I may try some any just to see what happens.
The Chocolat sign is indeed the perfect touch and so neat that hubby was able to surprise you.

Your tablecloth is beautiful and what a lovely reminder of a fabulous trip. I love the touch of lavender and lemons. The lemon slice in the drink looks so refreshing. Love the chocolait sign. I too loved that movie. Your table is the sheer image of what I imagine France to be. We have traveled to Germany, Austira, and Prague but have not made it to Spain or France. Mabybe some day. (one can hope) Thanks for sharing with Share Your Cup.
