Planting flowers certainly make me feel ready for summer, but we’re not really ready for summer at our house until the screened porch is hosed down, everything is dusted and cleaned, and our wrought iron shelf is accessorized. What activities are must-do on your list to feel ready for summer? Mulching? Painting a fence or other garden accessories? Getting the grill ready? This year (well, for now anyway), the shelf ended up with a bird/birdhouse theme:
We bought this shelf several years ago at a wonderful antique shop near our home. We thought it was a “keeper” that would work no matter where we lived (even Florida!), and though we haven’t moved, it’s still a keeper. For one thing, I love wrought iron. I love its filigree designs that contrasts with its rusty spots and the strength it conveys.
Birds/birdhouses and shells…some of my favorite things. The shell houses were a bday present from my coworkers years ago. They made them for me, and they’ve held up really well!
This chicken-wire cloche was a purchase late last year from Bombay (see my Bombay Company post here), and I’ve already used it several times for various vignettes. Good purchase. Love it.
The lighthouse candleholder? Another nod to beach and shells. I suspect there will be a switch mid-summer to a more beachy theme.
I have a “thing” about houses…well homes. Log homes, bungalows, doll houses, decorative houses, bird houses, beach houses, farm houses, big houses/little houses, twig houses,… I bought this one years ago, and I’ve used it in a million different ways.
Now, THIS ONE…this tray IS a tole tray…the hand painting is exquisite. A gift from my mother several years ago.
I’ve had the blue enamel spatterware coffeepot for many years, but I don’t remember if I bought it new, or if it’s old. That’s okay; I’m not planning on making money off of it. :) It’s the perfect watering can!
According to eBay posts, the “object” on the right is a minnow bucket… :) (I knew it had to do with fishing…as in holding the fish once caught, I thought—quite the fishing expert I am). All I know is that I like it, and it was my husband’s grandfather’s, and so it holds a place of honor where we can enjoy it.
Ahhh…how I love this timeworn watering can—it was a bday present to me from our youngest son. It has a lovely, now-faded Marjolein Bastin (what else?) CHICKADEE decal. How sweet is that? This gift came loooonnnnnnnnnnggg before our own little chickadee came along.
Another corner of the porch also has gone to the birds! The birdcage is the one we used for our son’s wedding back in November as a card holder. Now, it’s put to another good use to bring back happy memories.
The plants in it are an Italian parsley plant that’s perfect for stepping right out onto the porch to snip a bit for dinner, a miniature African violet, and of course, a CHICKADEE. A chubby robin sits nearby, keeping company to the many that hop around our yard.
What makes you feel like you’re ready for summer?
Thanks for stopping by. I hope you’ll leave me a comment to let me know you were here—I read every single one of them! And if you like what you see a lot :), maybe you’d like to Google +1 this post or pin it on Pinterest too! Thank you!

Like your antique collection! The stuffs of wrought iron are really wonderful and suitable for a decent decoration but sorry to say that I don't support the nesting of birds because the flying birds are beautiful to me. The obsession of your about the tray make me cheered as I've, too. Thanks for sharing your awesome collection.

That looks great, Zuni! I love the chicken wire cloche and those trays are wonderful. I saw a vendor at Springfield that had a whole bunch of trays {I don't think they were tole}. Can you believe I printed out your email with your number and left the paper in the car!! It was a long walk from the car to the fair grounds, so needless to say, I did not go back for it. Sue mentioned you were probably going Saturday anyway. Did you get go?
ReplyDeleteLove your collections and your shelf. So nice meeting you Friday. What fun in such a short amount of time. We will have to do this again soon.
ReplyDeleteI found you through Under the Table and Dreaming! I love birdhouses and wrought iron too! I have a glass mosaic birdhouse, but never though of using sea shells to cover one - duh! and I live in Ft. Lauderdale! Thanks for sharing your beautiful porch :)

ReplyDeleteHi Cora, I'm a porch person for real. It took me years to get our porch set up the way I had it planned in my mind. I love how you have decorated yours with pieces that mean a lot to you. I'm enjoying the Boogieboard Cottage Linky party too...I'm #58. Hope you visit me and also return the Linky follow..I'm your newest follower there. Helen
ReplyDeleteI am just so jealous that you have a screened in porch! I have only had one at one home in my life, and I loved it so much! There is just so much more you can do with it than one that's out in the open! The decorating possibilities are limitless!!!!! You have done a wonderful job with your great wrought iron shelving unit! It's fun to accessorize it, I'm sure! We have one on the deck, and I get a kick out of creating little vignettes on it. I love the birdhouse theme....perfect for the great outdoors! Hope you had a good weekend!
ReplyDeleteOh I love your porch! I want a screened in back porch!!!! I have a long front porch that I do enjoy. My friends call it the Cracker Barrel porch! But I want a back porch after seeing yours! So nice! Hugs and blessings, Cindy

Oh so jealous... what a wonderful place you have! We need a screened in porch - Spring is beautiful but later in the summer the mosquitoes drive us inside. Definitely need something like that! Yours is so lovely; adore the birdhouses / bird theme!

ReplyDeleteHello Zuni,
ReplyDeleteSummer is upon us isn't it! I just cleaned the front porch - hopefully someday it will have a pergola covering so we can enjoy it in the summertime - I love screened in porches - perfect place to enjoy sunny and rainy days! Love your wrought iron shelf! Your tole trays are gorgeous too - every detail wonderful. I appreciate you sharing with Home and Garden Thursday,

Zuni, I love your screened porch. I will be right over, I am bringing a pitcher of lemonade. Hugs, Ginger
ReplyDeleteYay, your screen porch is so summer-ready! Opening the porch is one of the best thing to look forward to during this season. That and the chance of getting together with friends and families to enjoy an outdoor dinner in a well-designed porch.

Trying very hard not to have envy over your screened porch! One of the very reasons I'd like to live in the south. Your summer decor is lovely. Thanks for sharing and blessings to you, Patti
